Academic and personal growth. As a fresh high school graduate, I stepped into the halls of Islington College with a sense of anticipation and eagerness to explore the opportunities that lay ahead. Little did I know that this college would soon become not just a place of learning but a second home, welcoming me with open arms into its vibrant community.
In my first year at Islington College, I was bestowed with a remarkable opportunity – the chance to serve as the class's star, also known as the Student Academic Representative. It was a role that not only honoured me but also entrusted me with the responsibility of representing my peers and facilitating communication between students and faculty.
As the class star, I found myself at the forefront of academic affairs, bridging the gap between student body and college administration. Whether it was conveying student feedback, organising class meetings, or addressing concerns, I embraced the role wholeheartedly, determined to make a positive impact within the college community.
Additionally, I had the privilege of participating in meetings with the university's representatives. As a student at Islington College, my journey was enriched with diverse work placements and valuable experiences that shaped my professional growth. During my second year at Islington, I had the opportunity to work as an intern in the business development department of the college itself. This internship provided a vital opportunity for me to delve into student counselling and parent engagement. From advising students to addressing parent concerns, I enhanced my networking and communication skills. This hands-on experience not only improved my understanding of college operations but also cultivated valuable connections within the Islington community.
In my third year, as part of our course requirements, we were tasked with completing an internship. Fortunately, Islington College proved to be incredibly supportive in helping us secure internship placements aligned with our academic pursuits. Amidst the numerous opportunities presented to us, I chose a work placement that aligned with my interests and career goals.
Throughout these work placements, I was able to apply theoretical knowledge gained from my coursework to practical, real-world scenarios. Whether it was counselling students, collaborating with colleagues, or undertaking projects, each experience contributed to my professional development and prepared me for the challenges of the workforce.
Immediately after graduating, I was provided with an exciting opportunity to work as a developer at Islington College. The professional experience I gained during my internship proved to be invaluable as I embarked on my professional journey. It equipped me with the necessary skills and insights to thrive in my new role and make meaningful contributions to the college's projects and initiatives.
Additionally, I embraced the opportunity to become a part-time teacher at Islington College. This role not only allowed me to share my knowledge with fellow students but also provided me with a platform to interact with fresh minds and contribute to the academic community. Fast forward two years since graduating, and I am now working as a project manager. This progression from intern to developer and eventually to project manager is a testament to the growth and opportunities afforded to me by Islington College. I started my Islington journey in 2019 as I enrolled into BSc. Hons Computing degree. My course played a pivotal role in opening doors to a multitude of opportunities and preparing me for the challenges of the professional world.
